These are some slides concerning food and food preparation. Traditionally food was cooked in an underground oven (umu). The last slides show a modified example of this, except a large truck (WWII tank?) wheel is used instead of a hole in the ground. In 1980-87, most food was fried. A main reason to keep pigs is to provide grease for frying.
- Preparing food for underground oven.
- Cook house (hale kuki). Note fire for frying and boiling; 44 gallon drum has been converted into oven.
- A storage area or nursery (hakatupulana) for sprouted coconuts (kanauto) .
- Baking bread using a large cracker tin.
- Butchering the pig.
- A pig is prepared by cutting its throat and then burning it and scraping the hair
